I put this on Twitter earlier this afternoon, and so far nobody's got it, so here it is for you lot.  First person to get it correct wins a pint.

I've been setting up a new Web server for my personal stuff lately.  I've moved SSH off port 22 to a non-standard port, and have picked port 28372.  There is a logical reason for choosing this particular port number.  Your task is to figure out what that reason is.

Things it isn't:

  • Related to a phone number
  • Related to a date
  • An error code
  • Something you would have to know me to see meaning in
  • Mathematically derived (well, only very slightly)
  • l33tsp34k, upside down or right way up
Things it is:
  • Awesome
Comments aren't screened and I'll acknowledge and award the pint to the first correct answer.

WE HAVE A WINNER!

Martin Connolly, an ex-colleague of mine, got it - ASCII codes combined with algebra.

S is 83
H is 72
2S, H
SSH.

Thanks for playing :)

Those of you who know me (at least in person) may recall I have a hematite ring I wear as a pendant. It was the last gift I received from my Mother and, as such, I was quite attached to the thing.

Well, making myself lunch this afternoon (houmous and pitta bread, if you were interested), I open the fridge and hear a *plink* noise. "The fridge doesn't make that noise," I say to myself, "why did-- hold on, why the fuck is the chain broken and flailing around my neck?" Somehow, the chain had broken and the ring had dropped to the concrete kitchen floor and shattered.

"D:", think I.

Fifteen minutes of searching around on hands and knees, and I uncover all the pieces. It's not unfixable, I expect. But that's not exactly  the point. Being the last gift I got from Parent, I was very fond of it.

Also, in the back of my mind I recall a discussion I had with her about losing rings. She claimed that (and it being a superstition, she believed it wholeheartedly), back when she was still married to my father, she was finishing the washing up and shook her hands to get rid of most of the soap suds. In doing so, her wedding ring came off her finger and skittered across the room.
This was, to her mind, a sign that her marriage was about to collapse. (As it turns out, it did within a few months... but as Scheherazade says, that is a story for another night.)
So, bearing this in mind, what does my mother's ring shattering mean? What can it foretell?

Ah well... off to find the superglue.

So I'm working on A Project, that some of you know about and some of you may not. I need your help. I need to offer gender choices. I want them to be suitably quantised while being as wide-ranging as possible.

The prompt for gender requests that you choose 'whatever you are most comfortable with', and these are the choices I have so far:

  • Male
  • Female
  • Male (androgynous)
  • Female (androgynous)
  • Trans (M2F)
  • Trans (F2M)
  • Gender Identity Refusenik
Can you think of any more that I should add?  Should I modify any of the existing ones (for example, offensiveness that I haven't noticed)?  Leave your input in a comment please!
